Week 39 Farewell Marty
Marty, our favorite salesman, passed away this week at the age of 90. I've known him for 20 years, my entire professional career. A tireless individual, he was actively visiting his accounts up to 3 weeks ago.
In 1980, he retired the first time and in 1981 went back to work. He spent 33 years at his first job and 24 at his second. At his funeral, his friends recounted many of their favorite Marty stories. I thought I'd share my favorite memory of him.
A couple years ago Marty didn't show up for his usual weekly visit. At his age, when he didn't stop by, we'd worry. Our conversation went something like this.
Marty "Sorry Eric I missed you last week. I went to California for vacation"
Me "Well its about time that boss of yours gives you some time off. What's going on in California?" I knew Marty never took time off.
Marty "I had to go for a birthday party"
Me "That's nice, who's birthday was it?"
Marty "It was my Uncles"
Me "Your Uncles !?!, Geez, Marty, how old is your Uncle!?!"
Marty " He turned 100. He is doing fine except he is sore because the kids are trying to take the car keys away."
Well Marty didn't make it to 100, but he did alright. He always had a word of encouragement and a little advice for me on his visits. He was the last of the old line salesman and a big baseball fan. I'm sure he is smiling somewhere as his White Sox' make a run for the pennant.
